so i started to answer this question but it needs to sound like an 11th grader in APUSH 3. What geographic features of the West might have had an impact on the spread of slavery?  ANSWER: The Geographical features of the west that had an impact on the spread of slavery were the milder climate and a more flat land type. This made the conditions more desireable for the people using the slaves because the slaves did not tire out as easily due to heat exhaustion.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Chattel slavery in the American South in 1850 had been perfected as a means of producing plantation crops like cotton and tobacco. Production of these crops is labor intensive and at times requires backbreaking work. The United States territory west of the Mississippi becomes less suited for plantation crops. The type of slavery practised in the South is not required in the lands found in the west. Varying from plains, huge mountains and vast areas of desert and semi arid lands, settlers would be hard pressed to find much land suited to plantations. The geography of the area eventually led to ranching, farming of crops such as wheat and corn, and mining. Use of slaves would probably have been limited to household servants and semi skilled craftsmen who would have been hired out by masters. Add in the vastness of the territory. It would have been much easier for slaves to steal a horse and flee to live with Indians or take up mining in the gold fields.
