OpenStudy (bipolarowls):

In The Hobbit, the dark setting that Bilbo encounters suddenly makes him fell more confident, but very scared. He was pushed way out of his comfort zone, because Hobbits never go on adventures. He has to fight many creatures, protect his friends, and make sure he stays alive. Bilbo still has a hard time fitting in with the dwarves, though. Thorin doubted him all the time, Gandalf left them alone, and he was told to interact with creatures by himself. The setting related to Bilbo because it is usually scary or described as if something bad could happen any second. Bilbo is usually scared, or caught in something bad in almost every part of the book. The setting influences a theme, captivity, because Bilbo is almost always captured or fighting a scary creature.
