OpenStudy (madr4t):

I need help with maximum values for function on a specific interval... I will post a picture of a problem below

OpenStudy (zyi6):

(4, 3) maybe?

OpenStudy (madr4t):

How did you get that? Because I'm wondering how to go about seeing where to look. Do I look at the x axis or y?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

It seems like they just want the max output value (aka the y coordinate of that local max)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

@MadR4t look for the highest point on the interval from x = -2 to x = 5. Erase the parts of the function not on the interval if it helps.

OpenStudy (madr4t):

the local and global maximum/minimum confuses me so much because what is the point where it becomes global?

OpenStudy (madr4t):

ok so i look at the x axis

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

local max = highest point in a certain region absolute max or global max = highest point of the entire function

OpenStudy (madr4t):

thank you! so it would be 4, 3?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

they just want the max output, so 3 is the highest output (y coordinate) the function produces if you restrict the inputs from x = -2 to x = 5, and anything in between those x values.

OpenStudy (madr4t):

thank you so much again

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no problem
