OpenStudy (shaylasha):

What is the value of y in the equation 4 + y = −3?

OpenStudy (iluvsoccer):

So basically we're solving for y?

OpenStudy (shaylasha):

yes

OpenStudy (iluvsoccer):

So in order to get y alone on one side we have to subtract 4 from -3 (-3) - 4 = what?

OpenStudy (shaylasha):

either 1 or negative 1

OpenStudy (iluvsoccer):

It equals -7 So now to check if we're correct, we do 4 + -7 and what do we get? 4 + (-7) = ?

OpenStudy (iluvsoccer):

We're just replacing -7 with y to see if we're correct. :)

OpenStudy (shaylasha):

oh thats right its different so you add not subtract

OpenStudy (shaylasha):

-3 we get -3

OpenStudy (shaylasha):

right?

OpenStudy (iluvsoccer):

Yep! So y = what? :)

OpenStudy (shaylasha):

y=-7 thanks so much

OpenStudy (iluvsoccer):

You are most welcome. :)
