OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

So personification is giving human-like quality to something that is not human. For example: the sun smiled at the earth. A metaphor is comparing something by saying something IS something else. For example: His eyes were gems. A simile is comparing something to something else by using like or as. For example: her hair is as bright as the sun. Hyperbole is an over-exaggeration of something. For example: I waited in line for 20 years! Onomatopoeia is using a word that describes a sound. For example: the eggs sizzled on the hot frying pan. Alliteration is the occurrence of the same is repeated sound at the beginning of a word throughout a sentence. Sally sold seashells by the sea shore.
