What do we know about angles on parallel lines? They add up to 180 degrees, right? |dw:1478742174103:dw| If you look at the figure, hopefully you can see that a + b = 180 That would mean that, if I rearrange the equation, I get that b = 180 - a, or that a = 180 - b. Maybe you can try and create an equation that relates the angles (x+1), (x-3) and 180. After you do that, you can try and find the relationship between one of those angles with the angle y.

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

Oops sorry I meant to say before, angles on a line (not angles on parallel lines). The fact that we have parallel lines means that a=a and b=b

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

It has two lines intersecting though, so it's not just one. That's what confuses me.

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

Ok ignore the "b" line for starters and just look at "a", with "e" and "f" intersecting it. Look at the angles along "a". Can you see what the angle under (x+1) would be?

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

\[(x+1)-180=?\]

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

Actually, it would be 180 - (x+1), but you're close! Order is important in subtraction though. In any case, we want to find what the other side of that equation is. Let me give you a hint|dw:1478742762134:dw| The two areas I circled are the same because the intersecting lines are parallel, which makes those circles angle "corresponding", and corresponding angles are equal!

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

So looking at my diagram, can you guess what "?" would be?

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

That would be x-3

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

Is y = x+1?

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

Yep!

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

You're right on both counts. So know that we know that (x-3) + (x+1) = 180, let's try and solve that equation to find x. Once we know x, finding y shouldn't be too hard because you already know that it's x+1

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

now that we know*

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

So the answer is 91.

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

Right?

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

Wait it's92

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

x=91

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

Then y is 91+1

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

That's right, nice correction! It's common to think you're answer is the one you worked so hard to get haha, but yes indeed it will be 91+1 = 92

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

your answer*... gee so many typos today haha

OpenStudy (big_mike_lifting):

Alright, thank you very much!

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

No worries mate, good luck with it all
