You'd expect to see asexual reproduction during times when there are favorable conditions for that species because they are able to quickly divide and reproduce passing on their favorable traits. The daphnia will reproduce sexually during unfavorable conditions because those conditions are unfavorable. During these uncertain times they need to reproduce sexually to be able to provide variation to their offspring in case of unfavorable conditions arise in the environment.
