I'm writing an Edgar Allan Poe report would it be safe to say that he "spear-headed the genre of mystery and horror"? I'm really struggling on which word I should use... Spear-headed sounds good, but is it too much?
I personally like it. It sounds like a good, strong, thesis-like statement.
It sounds a bit informal in my opinion...do you have any other words in mind? xD
I don't think it sounds terribly informal at all but it's definitely not "I'm giving a speech in front of the prime minister of India" formal. It does depend on the tone of rest of the report. I think it's good tone for say, a high school paper, but I don't know what level you are writing this for or the strictness of your teacher. In my opinion, I think it would give your paper voice if you stayed consistent with the style. I think that this can be more important than sounding like a 60 year-old historian. It would stand out to your teacher more. I'm not the best writer but I generally get good grades on papers. I tend to write with more voice (not necessarily informal) and my teachers have expressed that my papers are not as boring to read. In other words, don't try to make it super formal if that's not how you write but do use better words than grade-school level vocabulary. Your teacher can tell when you are reaching for a thesaurus for every word. :D

idk
It's an interesting statement. And I totally agree with it
That would be more helpful if you post your report here. So we could try to look for the best word choice for you. Another way out is to go to the Marvelous essay service and ask the professionals from it to proofread your paper.
