Just out of curiosity, what would happen if a human was exposed to gamma rays?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

So here's some stuff I recall from a discussion in my high school chem. class: Gamma rays, in contrast to other forms of radiation, are more capable of penetrating through matter. So since it can go through human skin, gamma rays are capable of causing mutations in DNA and hindering cellular functions as a result. However, this is probably what would happen in small doses. If a exposed to a higher amount, I would assume that the amount of damage to the human body would correspondingly increase. Keep in mind, as well, that while mutations may outright kill cells, it could also cause the cell to act abnormally and perhaps multiply at an uncontrolled rate. So it would be reasonable to say that too much radiation may cause cancer, as well.

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

So if a human was exposed to massive amounts of gamma rays if could most likely kill them?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

Probably

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

Gotcha
