OpenStudy (diva30):

write a word phrase for the expression. then simplify. 3(w-1) please help

OpenStudy (magentama202):

3 of one less than W is the word phrase because the "of" represents the multiplication piece, and then you have to add in the -1 as "one less than" just before the W.

OpenStudy (magentama202):

do you know how to simplify an equation?

OpenStudy (diva30):

no

OpenStudy (magentama202):

So the first thing you want to do is multiply the \[3*w\] . what would this equal?

OpenStudy (diva30):

0

OpenStudy (magentama202):

since you're multiplying a number times the variable, you can actually just write it like 3w, and this wil show the 3 is being multiplied by the w. For the next step, you just do 3 * -1, which would be...?

OpenStudy (diva30):

-3w

OpenStudy (magentama202):

Oh, sorry, I'm back, but the w is actually not in this part of the equation, but yes, it is -3. so now you just combine the equation, so if that is what you were doing above, close. Just remember you cannot combine 3w and -3, and if you were to add/multiply/subract or divide these two terms it would not equal -3w. The terms will stay separate.

OpenStudy (magentama202):

@Diva30, you should be getting something like 3w-3. If this isnt the case idk whats up.

OpenStudy (diva30):

thank you
