OpenStudy (macaylam):

What is the best first step for solving the given system using substitution while avoiding fractions? 3x+y=9 5x-3y=1 a. Solve for x in the first equation. b. Solve for y in the first equation. c. Solve for x in the second equation. d. Solve for y in the second equation. I think its A

563blackghost (563blackghost):

Not quite. Usually you have slope-intercept and standard. We would want to change the first into slope-intercept. So we would solve for y.

OpenStudy (cp123):

You know it isnt c or d because either way, you get a fraction.

563blackghost (563blackghost):

This is also due to the fact y is already to itself.

OpenStudy (macaylam):

yeah, its actually b

OpenStudy (cp123):

I guess that is true, but they shouldn't have given 3x. because we all know 3 is divisible by 9. so yeah i guess i would say solve for y too

OpenStudy (will.h):

Solving for y would only require subtracting 3x from both sides in the 1st equation So yeah B

OpenStudy (cp123):

oh yeah but then you would have y/3. so its definitely solving for y

OpenStudy (macaylam):

thanks for helping me :)
