geometry!!!!

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

hint: A and B are adjacent angles so 4x - 9 + x - 1 = 180 solve for x

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

can we go over this tomorrow, my brain is out of juice

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

sure

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Combine "like terms" on the left side of 4x - 9 + x - 1 = 180. Then solve the resulting equation for x.

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

@Vocaloid im back

OpenStudy (seratul):

Do what @vocaloid and @mathmale said and solve for x in the equation 4x - 9 + x - 1 = 180

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Combine "like terms" on the left side of 4x - 9 + x - 1 = 180. Then solve the resulting equation for x.

OpenStudy (seratul):

Do you need help solving for x?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hint: 4x and x are "like terms"

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Combine them.

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

does x equal 1

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

the only reason im confused is becuase ive never done a problem similar to the one above where i have to solve for x

OpenStudy (seratul):

Not quite. Do the problem again, but write every step down here so I can correct you if you make a mistake.

OpenStudy (seratul):

I'll get you started. 4x - 9 + x - 1 = 180 - Combine like terms 5x-10=180

OpenStudy (seratul):

What would be next?

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

subtract 10 from both sides?

OpenStudy (seratul):

Correct. What do you get?

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

ok but do i subtract 10 from 50 or 180

OpenStudy (seratul):

I meant to say add 10 on each side.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If you had 5x-10=180, then you need to add 10 to both sides the "add 10" undoes the "minus 10"

OpenStudy (seratul):

Sorry, that's my fault. Like @jim_thompson5910 said, you add 10 on each side 5x-10=180 +10 +10 5x=190

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

^im aware of how it undoes the minus 10 but what im asking is what other side am i taking it from |dw:1479690260487:dw|

OpenStudy (seratul):

The first one

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you only add 10 once per side |dw:1479690354822:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

think of it like you're balancing a scale http://www.eduplace.com/math/mw/background/5/02/graphics/ts_5_2_tt-1.gif

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

ok i got x=38

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`ok i got x=38` correct now use this to find the measure of angle A

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

so does this mean that b = 38 or do i need to plug it in

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the teacher gave you measure of angle A = 4x - 9 replace every copy of x with 38 and simplify

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

measure of angle A = 4x - 9 measure of angle A = 4*38 - 9 measure of angle A = ???

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

A=143

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`A=143` correct, that's the measure of angle A

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

ok thank you
