Can someone help me with writing a real life scenario where the pythagoream theorem can be used?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Note: the P. Theorem applies only when a triangle is a right triangle (has a 90-degree angle). So, you could use the P. T. to show that a given triangle is "right" or not.

John is working on a woodworking project. He needs a rectangular piece of wood, 3 feet by 4 feet. He had his lumber supplier cut one for him. John is not sure if the sides are really perpendicular to each other. Two opposite sides do measure 3 ft, and the other two opposite sides do measure 4 ft. Now he measures a diagonal of the rectangular board, and it measures 4.8 ft. Luckily, in addition to his excellent woodworking skills, John is a student of Geometry, so he immediately concludes that the board is not really rectangular.

OpenStudy (kkaitlynplays):

thank you

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

BTW, do you know how John figured out the board was not really a rectangle?
