OpenStudy (zenmo):

Determine whether the given vector is parallel.

OpenStudy (zenmo):

a = < -5, 3, 7 >, b = < 6, -8, 2 >

OpenStudy (danjs):

two vectors will be in the same direction parallel if they are some scalar multiple of one another...

OpenStudy (zenmo):

Is there an algebraic way to see that?

OpenStudy (danjs):

vector a equals some constant k times vector b, then they are parallel vectors a = k * b

OpenStudy (danjs):

a = < -5, 3, 7 >, b = < 6, -8, 2 > a = k * b < -5, 3, 7 > = k*< 6, -8, 2 >

OpenStudy (zenmo):

So, lets say, to check my understanding, a = < 2, 2, 2 > and b = < 4, 4, 4 > Then this would be parallel?

OpenStudy (danjs):

yes, each entry on those are 2 times the other one

OpenStudy (zenmo):

Okay, I got it now. Thanks for the help :)

OpenStudy (danjs):

welcome
