Which of the following statements best describes the location of −(−1) on a number line? It is 1 unit to the left of 0. It is 1 unit to the right of 0. It is 1 unit to the right of 1. It is 1 unit to the left of 1.

OpenStudy (harlyquinn4life):

The number line shows the graph of an inequality: Which statement explains whether −3.5 can be a value in the shaded region? Yes it can, because −3.5 lies to the right of −1.5. No it cannot, because −3.5 lies to the left of −1.5. Yes it can, because −3.5 lies to the left of −1.5. No it cannot, because −3.5 lies to the right of −1.5.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

-(-1) = 1 where is 1 on the number line?

OpenStudy (harlyquinn4life):

There is no image. Just use the one that I attached.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

I'm asking you to try to fine where 1 is on the number line yourself

OpenStudy (harlyquinn4life):

It's really confusing. It says -(-1) and that's really confusing.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

negative means 'on the other side of 0' so if 1 is on the right side of 0 then -1 is on the left side of 0 then the negative of -1 would make it go back to the right side of 0 therefore, -(-1) = 1

OpenStudy (harlyquinn4life):

Thank you! But what about the other question?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

do you know where -3.5 is on the line?

OpenStudy (harlyquinn4life):

Yeah.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

is it on the shaded part of the line in the picture?

OpenStudy (harlyquinn4life):

Yes.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

then is it left or right of -1.5?

OpenStudy (harlyquinn4life):

left.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

perfect! that should get you to your answer :)
