OpenStudy (evlyiana):

Which of the following is the best definition for an appositive? A noun or pronoun that is placed after another noun or pronoun to identify, rename, or explain it A nonessential phrase that is set off by commas to separate it from the main sentence A phrase that, if removed, will change the meaning of the sentence A phrase that, if removed, will not change the meaning of the sentence

OpenStudy (osprey):

I think that the words "apposite" and "appropriate" have similar meanings. On that basis, I'd go for top one. There could also be some sort of relationship between "opposite" and "apposite" (I don't know the original language from which these words are derived, but I'd guess at greek.) Opposite means opposing. Apposite could mean supporting. Maybe that would also back up the top one.
