What is the volume of the prism below? http://media.apexlearning.com/Images/200701/05/76f21f4f-eb56-4629-bd96-6f4cd7751c59.gif A. 288 units3 B. 180 units3 C. 56 units3 D. 144 units3

OpenStudy (retireed):

Take the area of the triangle times the length. That should be the volume.

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

oooooo so its 144?

OpenStudy (retireed):

That's what I got.

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

Says correct. Thank you !

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

@retirEEd Could you help me with another?

OpenStudy (retireed):

If you want, but the more you ask the more you will have to do on your own. That is so I know you are learning.

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

Yes of course. I just am not sure how to it for a cylinder

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

What is the volume of the cylinder below? http://media.apexlearning.com/Images/200701/05/93a92414-63c7-441e-93c4-5763395bb7e5.gif

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

A. 2042 units3 B. 968 units3 C. 1815 units3 D. 352 units3

OpenStudy (retireed):

Same process, different area to calculate.

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

i got 1796.99 when i calculated area

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

not sure what to do after that

OpenStudy (retireed):

What area did you calculate? write out your steps, because I got a different answer for the area.

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

I used the google calculator to quickly get the area. Ohh says surface area

OpenStudy (retireed):

oops

OpenStudy (retireed):

Remember how you solved for the volume of a triangular prism. You found the area of the triangle times the length. How would you solve for the volume of a cylinder?

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

hmm thats where i got confused. So when i calculate the area, i have to times it by the base and height ? And to verify its area im looking for, not surface area?

OpenStudy (retireed):

Just the height and NOT the surface area. Remember "area of the triangle times the length" but now you have a cylinder instead of a prism.

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

Would the area be 380?

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

A = π x 11^2 = 380

OpenStudy (retireed):

The area of the circular end is pi*11^2 and that equals 380.1 square units. Good job!

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

So then 380x15 = 5700

OpenStudy (retireed):

Yeah now come the tough question. Which answers is it? A. 2042 units3 B. 968 units3 C. 1815 units3 D. 352 units3

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

Thats what lost me ..

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

how would i figure that out? what additional step would i have to do?

OpenStudy (retireed):

I think you copied the wrong set of answers or post the wrong question.

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

There is the pi symbol before units

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

i will screenshot it, one sec

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

OpenStudy (retireed):

just divide 5700 by pi

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

Would that be C then?

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

Correct. I appreciate it sir !
