OpenStudy (kaedalozzano10):

What would be the lowest common denominator for the fractions 1/12 and 3/6 A. 8 B. 24 C. 36 D. 12

OpenStudy (sunnnystrong):

The LCD is the LCM of the denominators.... So: What is the LCM of 12 and 6?

OpenStudy (kaedalozzano10):

8 i think

OpenStudy (sunnnystrong):

It's not 8...

OpenStudy (kaedalozzano10):

ok

OpenStudy (kaedalozzano10):

what about 36

OpenStudy (desmarie):

the LCM is 12 because 6 goes into 12 and 12 is already a denominator. the first fraction would remain the same and the second one would convert to 9/12

OpenStudy (desmarie):

sorry 6/12

OpenStudy (sunnnystrong):

Think about it like this: What is the smallest multiple that 12 and 6 will form? @desmarie yep

OpenStudy (sunnnystrong):

36 is a multiple but 12 will be the smallest multiple so 12 is the LCD

OpenStudy (kaedalozzano10):

ok and 24 is that right

OpenStudy (kaedalozzano10):

can some one plz help me

OpenStudy (sunnnystrong):

Well no. If it were 24.... 2/24 and 12/24 would be your two fractions.... But these can both be simplified further and still have the same denomination ... If it were 12 1/12 and 6/12 <---- this is correct because 12 is a smaller multiple than 24

OpenStudy (kaedalozzano10):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (sunnnystrong):

NP

OpenStudy (mlparks13):
