OpenStudy (anannana):

What message does F. Scott Fitzgerald hope we take away from reading the great gatsby?

OpenStudy (derek):

The message is that the American dream is illusory. It makes men do extraordinary and unethical things (Gatsby's reinvention and obscene wealth) but however much they chase the green light, it is forever out of reach. Gatsby finds Daisy but their reunion is shortlived. He has to maintain his own delusions about her to make sense of his own life and self image. The readers know that Daisy is flawed and perhaps not worth the magnanimous Quixotic Gatsby. And she is wrested away from him in large part because of the same social structures that kept them apart in the first place. At the end, Tom and Daisy revert to their own way of living and the world moves on as if there was no Gatsby ever reaching out to the green light. Do you need to write a paper on it?
