Which excerpt from The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde uses direct characterization? I took and furnished that house in Soho, to which Hyde was tracked by the police . . . I announced to my servants that a Mr. Hyde (whom I described) was to have full liberty and power about my house in the square . . . This familiar that I called out of my own soul, and sent forth alone to do his good pleasure, was a being inherently malign and villainous . . . An act of cruelty to a child aroused against me the anger of a passer-by, whom I recognized the other day in the person of your kinsman .
i have never read the excerpt so i can not really help you but by understanding what direct characterization is, you should easily find the answer
Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Characterization is revealed through direct characterization and indirect characterization. Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is.
read each choice and think " Does this show the personality traits of one of the characters?"
let me know when you find a choice you think is correct
This is the "jekyll and hyde" thing by RL Stevenson as I vaguely remember it. J is the experimental medic who comes up with some idea to separate his personality into nice J and v nasty H. For direct characterisation, this passage looks promising. This familiar that I called out of my own soul, and sent forth alone to do his good pleasure, was a being inherently malign and villainous . . . An act of cruelty to a child aroused against me the anger of a passer-by, whom I recognized the other day in the person of your kinsman. It sort of reminds me of the film about the Boston Strangler starring Henry Fonda (police) and Tony Curtis (strangler) The BS has two sides to his personality, so the story goes. One is "wonderful", t'other isn't wonderful. And the BS seems to flick at random between personalities, unbeknownst to either mr wonderful or mr not wonderful, or anyone around him. The story goes that if the BS's two sides were induced to actually "meet", then the BS would go into meltdown. I seem to remember that, at the end of the film there's a note to say that the BS was never actually "done" for the murders... There is also the case of "Cybil" in the film of the name.
