@hero Question 4 (Multiple Choice Worth 1 points) (04.05) The graph of f(x) = 2x + 3 shifts 10 units to the right when it is replaced with the graph of f(x) = 2x − k. What is the value of k? 3 7 10 13 @mathstudent55 @pooja195 @preetha @mathmale @zepdrix @3mar

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'd suggest you actually graph f(x) = 2x+3. Then, shift the whole graph to the right by 10 units (re-drawing the line). Note that the vertical offset, 3, will NOT change, because you're not translating the graph up or down. I have trouble doing this just through manipulating the formula. On the other hand, a graph would tell us the value of k pretty quickly. Willing to try it?

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

Yes

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

So when I do that what do I do????

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

So the ANWSER is b????? @mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Where is the graph I asked you to draw?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If you begin with f(x) = 2x + 3, and shift this graph 10 units to the right, the equation of the new graph is g(x) = 2(x-10) + 3. Can you simplify this?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

How did you decide that the answer is "b?"

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Rule: If you have the graph of f(x) and want to translate it s units to the right, your graph becomes g(x) = f(x-s). If you have the graph of f(x) = 2x + 3 and want to translate it s units to the right, you graph becomes what? Write it out, following the example above.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If you have the graph of f(x) = 2x +3 and want to translate it 10 units to the right, your function becomes what? Write it out.

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

tHe x is2 the y is10

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

So the ANWSER is c ten right???

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Unfortunately, no. Have you sketched this situation? How did you get "ten?" If you have the graph of f(x) = 2x +3 and want to translate it 10 units to the right, your function becomes what? Write it out.

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

So the ANWSER is d????@mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Rule (again): If you are given g(x) and have graphed it, then h(x) = g(x-10) will be the equivalent of shifting graph of g(x) 10 units to the right. Please, try to think your way through this. Sounds as tho' you may just be guessing.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You are given f(x) = 2x + 3. Please evalute f(x-10). This means: Wherever you see x, replace it with (x-10).

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

I am. Encaustic I a being timed I know how to do TJIS but I need the ANWSER I know it's against the rules but can you tell me if I am right or wrongd

OpenStudy (mathmale):

In both cases you have, unfortunately, been wrong. Sorry. Speed isn't everything. Undrstanding is more important (at least in my opinion).

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You are given f(x) = 2x + 3. Please evalute f(x-10). This means: Wherever you see x, replace it with (x-10).

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

So the only two left is a and b????

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'm giving you hints that should help you solve this problem. You need to undrstand the math involved, Abrose. Please do not ask "so it's a?" or "so it's b?" because that's just guessing.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Given p(x) and its graph, we can get a new function and a graph s units to the right of the orginal graph by replacing "x" with "x-s." Given f(x) and its graph, we can get a new function and a graph 10 units to the right of the original graph by replacing "x" with "x-10." Go for it.
