jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If a polygon has 4 sides, is it always a square?

OpenStudy (baby_bear69):

No :3

OpenStudy (sshayer):

pentagon has five sides.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the first one is false if it's a square, then it has 4 sides but the opposite isn't true (eg: a rectangle has 4 sides but doesn't have to be a square)

OpenStudy (baby_bear69):

Ohh okay! that makes sense!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

similarly, the third one is false as well if you have a rectangle, then you have 4 sides but if you have 4 sides, then you don't always have a rectangle (you could have a square, some non-rectangular parallelogram, or some quadrilateral with no parallel sides)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and as @sshayer is saying, if you have 5 sides, then you have a pentagon. Or if you have a pentagon, then you have 5 sides. This is by definition of what "pentagon" means. So the second statement is true.

Thank you so much!!!
