help with this question?http://prntscr.com/dkk67j

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

@Jerry45

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

i just need help setting up the equations. and i can solve the rest myself.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Setting up the equation is the part that you need to be learning. Find the corresponding parts. Which part of ABC CORRESPONDS with side DE?

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

AC?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I believe so. Now to the equation. If they are corresponding, then they are ...?

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

x + 4 = 3x -5?

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

congruent

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I'm changing my mind. This is a tricky one because the triangles are ALMOST isosceles. In this case, we must look VERY CAREFULLY at how the triangles are labeled. If we have ABC, we probably should go with DEF (alphabetical order). This means: AB corresponds to DE BC corresponds to EF CA corresponds to FD Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

oh ok, yes it does.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

NOW the equation. :-)

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

x + 6 = 3x - 5?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

That's the spirit. Solve and you are done. Of course, there is a funny answer to this problem.

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

x= 11/2?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

LOL

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

The problem statement should say, "Find the VALUE of x." :-)

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

I think side AC corresponds to DE

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I think you have it. It's a little odd that it is not asking for the lengths of the sides, It just wants "x". So be it!

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

idk. does x = 11/2?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

It's not as clear as it could be. If we spin DEF 180º, then that is what it appears to be. If we flip DEF upside down, then it is AB vs DE. Like I said, it is a close call on this one. We should have a better drawing. The alphabetical order is really the best clue we have. x = 11/2 is fine.

OpenStudy (lolipopss):

Thanks
