HELP WILL MEDAL Question 8 (Multiple Choice Worth 1 points) (04.03) A dance competition on television had five elimination rounds. After each elimination, only one-fourth of the contestants were sent to the next round. The table below shows the number of contestants in each round of the competition: x 1 2 3 4 5 f(x) 512 128 32 8 2 Compute the average rate of change of f(x) from x = 2 to x = 4 and describe what it represents. −60 contestants per round, and it represents the average rate at which the number of contestants changed from the second round to the fourth round −120 contestants

OpenStudy (mathmale):

There's a formula for "average rate of change" that is pretty much the same as the familiar "slope of a straight line" formula. Do you know this formula?

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

C.-60 contestants per round,and it represents the number of contestants who will reach the final round. D.-120 contestants per round,and it represents the number of contestants who will reach the final round

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

@mathstudent55 no I donot know the formula

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

M=y2-y1/x2-x1 is that the formula???

OpenStudy (welshfella):

the formula is f(n) - f(m) -------- n - m where n and m are the 'x values' and f(n) and f(m) are the values of the function when x = n and x = m.

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

Can u help me

OpenStudy (3mar):

Are you familiar with that?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yes just plug in the given values in the formula y2 = 128 an y1 = 8 what is x1 and x2?

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

X1=12 and x2=4?????

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

@welshfella

OpenStudy (welshfella):

x1 = 2 and x1 = 4

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

Wait no X1=2 and x2=4

OpenStudy (welshfella):

giving 128 - 8 / 2-4

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

So now when I get that what do I do????? @welshfella

OpenStudy (welshfella):

work it out (128 - 8) / (2-4) = ?

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

The ANWSER is -60

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

But wich negative sixty would it be???? @welshfella

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

-60 contestants per round,and it represents the number of contestants who will reach the final round??????

OpenStudy (welshfella):

remember - you are working out an average rate.

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

So the ANWSER would Ben he one I just sent you???

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

Or the one I posted with the question??

OpenStudy (welshfella):

does your answer say the -60 is an average rate?

OpenStudy (mrs.ambrose614):

The first one dos

OpenStudy (welshfella):

then you know the answer
