How to Approach a Math Problem

Vocaloid:

1. READ the problem. I can't believe this actually needs to be said, but I've had people post questions without even TRYING to read them. The answer isn't going to fall out of the sky.

Vocaloid:

2. Write down two columns: "Given" and "Find." Example: If the question gives you the perimeter (say, 100 ft^2) of a square fence and asks you to find the area, you could write: "Given: P = 100 ft^2, for square fence" and "Find: area"

3. Think about what sorts of things you have been studying in class. If you have been studying systems of equations, for example, perhaps the problem wants you to write a system of equations for the given situation, and solve it.

Vocaloid:

4. Draw a diagram, if applicable. This might reveal a clue you might not have realized. For example, given the problem: "Sally walked 3 miles east and 4 miles north. What's the length of the shortest path she can take back to the starting point?" The answer might not be obvious until you draw a picture (the shortest path is the hypotenuse of a triangle).

Vocaloid:

5. Consult a reputable source, such as a teacher or a trusted tutor for assistance. The internet can be helpful if you know how to use the right keywords. If you copy paste and put quotes around your question, you might be able to find someone who has solved the exact problem you have.
