Need help with correcting this-- What did I do wrong? I understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes and fears. I understood that, finally and absolutely, I alone exist. All the rest, I saw, is merely what pushes me, or what I push against, blindly—as blindly as all that is not myself pushes back. I create the whole universe, blink by blink.—An ugly god pitifully dying in a tree! Select one example of figurative language that the author uses in this excerpt. Identify the type of figurative language used and then explain what the figurative language means and analyze what it tells the reader about the story’s narrator. Be sure to use specific details from the excerpt to support your ideas.' My Answer: "An ugly god pitifully dying in a tree" is an example of figurative language. This is figurative language because it is using a human characteristic to define something that isn't alive. This example is portraying the fact that this is a depressing or sad time. Obviously this is not an easy time for Grendel, he is coming to the conclusion that this “fantasy world” is just plain mindless and destructive. The use of figurative language in this excerpt specifically targets the idea of sorrow and unhappiness.

is "An ugly god pitifully dying in a tree" a metaphor?

zarkam21:

Yes, she said that I didn't explain what type of figurative language it is, and then said that if you are doing personification it is not a good example

Allison:

Okay then we can cross out Personification.

zarkam21:

Okay we can cross out simile because it does not use like or as

Allison:

A metaphor doesn't use "like" and "as", that would be a Similie.

Allison:

Wow x'D good thinking lol

Allison:
