so you want to factor every expression as much as possible, then cancel things out

so you start by drawing arrows/lines like the red and blue ones above
on the "tails" of the arrows, pick two factors of the first coefficient (the coefficient of the square term)
on the "tips" pick two factors of the constant term
then multiply in the direction indicated by the arrows and then add the two products
the final result needs to add up to the middle coefficient
when you first learn this method you will have to use trial and error, but the more you practice, the better you will be at picking numbers/ and picking where to put them
so for 4k^2 - 12k + 9 = (2k-3)^2 I picked 2 and 2 to be the tails of the arrows, and then -3 and -3 as the tips of the arrows
