rootbeer003:

So lets look over those first

ThisGirlPretty:

Okie

rootbeer003:

About how much were slave owners willing to pay as rewards for returned slaves?

rootbeer003:

Fifty dollars?

ThisGirlPretty:

Thats what I'd go with @JustSaiyan

rootbeer003:

About how much do you think that is worth in today’s dollars? (guess)

ThisGirlPretty:

Hmmm, I'd say maybe thousands XD

rootbeer003:

wait from the other question it could be 100

rootbeer003:

@JustSaiyan

ThisGirlPretty:

What do you think saiyan?

JustSaiyan:

I will have to look at everything first, give me a minute.

ThisGirlPretty:

Take your time sir

JustSaiyan:

What exactly.....is the question?

rootbeer003:

About how much were slave owners willing to pay as rewards for returned slaves?

ThisGirlPretty:

"About how much were slave owners willing to pay as rewards for returned slaves?"

JustSaiyan:

Ah. Well it seems to depend on the size/age/gender of the slave.

JustSaiyan:

Strong slaves that were capable of massive workloads would be worth more than small ones with disease or other atrophies.

rootbeer003:

Oh where does it say that? i cant find it

JustSaiyan:

It doesn't say it, but it makes sense, though, doesn't it? Why would you want to pay a large amount of money to get back a useless slave?

ThisGirlPretty:

I agree

rootbeer003:

Well the instructions say to get the info from the those pics and Answer questions in complete sentences providing details/examples/evidence with an explanation of your thinking

rootbeer003:

You think i could add what you said?

JustSaiyan:

Well, one person offered a $50 reward for a 35 year old man, while another person offered a $100 reward for a 22 year old man, only inches shorter that the other, but 13 years younger, and as it put it: "well set" or "big build"

rootbeer003:

ohh

rootbeer003:

makes sense now

rootbeer003:

About how much do you think that is worth in today’s dollars? (guess)

ThisGirlPretty:

I said Maybe in the thousands or millions o.o

JustSaiyan:

Well, the economy has gone up since then, so $100 then would be around......$2,800 in todays money, give or take a little.

rootbeer003:

Anymore explanation you could add maybe?

JustSaiyan:

Well if I had a slave, and I was making that much money off of them, I would also be a greedy prick, so I wouldn't offer any more than $400

rootbeer003:

ok good enough lol

rootbeer003:

Did you notice Thomas Jefferson wrote the first Runaway Slave Ad included above. How do you think a man who wrote that “All men are created equal” could also be a slaveowner? What beliefs does he (as well as most of society) have that enables this type of thinking and behaviors? (This answer comes from the chapter reading & background knowledge)

JustSaiyan:

Well most slave owners thought that whites were in some way better or more important than blacks.

JustSaiyan:

I think that Thomas Jefferson can say and do two different things. Just because he owned slaves, does NOT mean that he mistreated them, or used them for labor. It can also mean is one of the biggest hypocrites in history.

rootbeer003:

i agree

rootbeer003:

Did you notice that all the Runaway Slave Ads name the slave that ran away? Do you think this helps in the return of the runaway slave explain why or why not.

JustSaiyan:

Yes I do, as it will give a way for someone who find the slave to get his/her attention, or at least, give them something to call them. If you were in a crowded street, and someone yells "hey you" or "Guy!" would you think they were talking to you?

rootbeer003:

How effective do you think these types of Runaway Slave Ads and others were in the return of runaway slaves?

JustSaiyan:

Apparently, quite effective, as the "Runaway Slave Laws" were enacted, in with all runaway slaves were to be returned to their owner upon capture, and often times bounty hunters were the ones capturing them.

rootbeer003:

What kinda evidence could we add

JustSaiyan:

The fact that they continued to post fliers.

rootbeer003:

ok thanks so much for helping :)

JustSaiyan:

You're welcome.
