Vocaloid:

so find x = -b/2a where a is the coefficient of the x^2 term and b is the coefficient of the x term

zarkam21:

6

Vocaloid:

-b/2a = -(-6)/(2*2) = ?

zarkam21:

solve for a or B?

Vocaloid:

x = -b/(2a) you are asked to find x, so simply plug in a and b to find x

zarkam21:

-6

Vocaloid:

b = -6 a = 2 -b/(2a) = ?

zarkam21:

-12/(2x1)

zarkam21:

-12/2

zarkam21:

-6

zarkam21:

@Vocaloid

Vocaloid:

you might be doing a/2b instead of b/(2a) -b/(2a) = -(-6)/(2*2) = -(-6)/4 = 3/2 = your ans

zarkam21:

okay and b is 12 correct?

Vocaloid:

b = -6

zarkam21:

and a is 2?

Vocaloid:

yes

zarkam21:

it is dalse

Vocaloid:

hm.

zarkam21:

i put it into mathway and it is saying that the statement is false

Vocaloid:

that's odd, when I graph the equation it gives me x = (3/2) as the axis of symmetry :S

zarkam21:

i don't know i put it into mathway with the substitutions and it says false

Vocaloid:

what exactly are you entering? can you show me your screen?

Vocaloid:

Huh. Mathway is sometimes weird. Using good old-fashioned algebra gives me 3/2 though, you can also verify this by graphing the original equation.

zarkam21:

Okay sounds good, so the answer is 3/2

Vocaloid:

yes
