@Vocaloid
have you made any attempts/progress yet? (it's ok if you haven't, just want to know where we should start)
not yet
dw:1520525101127:dw
since we don't have a right triangle here we have to use the law of sines
dw:1520525176109:dw
do you think you can try to apply this formula to find the missing side length (the height of the tower) in your problem?
we use capital letters A, B, and C to label the angles lowercase letters are the sides across from the angles so a is across angle A, etc.
dw:1520525492910:dw
now, if we look at the law of sines formula a/sinA = b/sinB what do you think a might be equal to?
32
dw:1520525616940:dw
if we look at the diagram, see how angle A is 69 degrees, angle B is 86 degres, and b is 82? try plugging these into the formula a/sinA = b/sinB
3rd angle is 25
please follow my instructions
b is the answer
again, please follow my instructions

i just solved it i did 82/sin 86 and got me .997 and didn't do nything because sin 86 is .997 so I did sin 86 and took 82/.997 and got 86. something
you haven't taken into account angle A a/sin(69) = 82/sin(86) what does a equal?
.93 is sin 69
good, keep going with the calculation, what does a equal?
when i did 77 i got about 83 which is the closest 87 i get 94
check your calculations again a/sin(69) = 82/sin(86) a = 82*sin(69)/sin(86) = ?
i got 77 when I calculated 82*.93/*99 other wise i would be stuck with some off the wall anaswer if i type sin several times
good, so it's about 77 ft (answer A)
2?
since it's the same tower of pisa, we re-use the same height and draw a new triangle
dw:1520526519226:dw
use the law of sines again to find the distance between the person and the tower (x)
what equation do I use for this because i did the same one before and got 93
oh shoot hold on
dw:1520526877393:dw
sorry I messed up the angle for the first problem, it needs to be 86 with the ground not the top angle
x/sin(69) = 82/sin(180-69-86) the height of the tower is 181 (C) not 77 whoops
anyway, for problem #2 we would use 181 as the height so:
dw:1520526956326:dw
try solving for x now using the law of sines
whats the 25 there for?
dw:1520527121706:dw
should be 39 sorry the measurement of the top angle is 39 degrees
solve like I did last?
yes
221 and 39 is what i got
x/sin(39) = 181/sin(55) x = ?
181(sin(55)=221
x/sin(39) = 181/sin(55) notice how x is being divided by sin(39) on the left side? we would multiply both sides by sin(39) to isolate x
181 * sin(39) / sin(55) = ?
139
good, 139 feet is your answer
anyway, for #3 let's sketch a triangle
dw:1520528467494:dw
find x, law of sines again
b
well done
i also want to say b for next one i believe a student actually used this for their discussion
let's look at the next problem w/ the boats|dw:1520528942952:dw|
first step: use law of sines to find the angle at the top
dw:1520529028308:dw
40/sin(y) = 28/sin(37) solve for y, then we'll use y to find x
A
yeah that's what I got too
4&5
let's work on the tree problem |dw:1520529658508:dw|
actually I'm not sure how we could solve this w/o knowing the other angle hm..
its a practice so its not gonna kill me lol
gonna guess it's no soln' would like to know the correct solution later if possible
is there anything after 5?
no and so both no solution
the 40 mile light house we got A (46.27) the one about the tree we got no sol'n
5?
I don't see a problem #5 in the original attachment
is c?
c
yeah that's what i got too
