Question on grammar/phrasing: "How many older brothers and older sisters do you have?" I only know "brothers and sisters" as 兄弟姐妹 so idk how to translate this. 你有多少 ...? Also, can we use 姐 for sister, or does it have to be 大姐?

kittybasil:

@Angle ( @Vocaloid for future reference lmao )

Vocaloid:

你有多少 (ni you duo shao) is another way to ask how much/how many of something you have

Vocaloid:

"older brothers and older sisters" --> 哥哥和姐姐? not sure if this is the most natural way to say it

Vocaloid:

also I'm pretty sure 大姐 is only used for the oldest of your older sisters

Angle:

兄弟姐妹 is the more preferable when you're generalizing "sibling" personally instead of "duo shao" I would use "ji" ... I feel like it it more correct for some reason... like "ji" might refer to whole numbers? here's a source: https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-%E2%80%9Cji%E2%80%9D-and-%E2%80%9Cduoshao%E2%80%9D-in-Chinese-Mandarin but yeah "ni you ji ge xiong di jie mei?" is how I would say it (你有几个兄弟姐妹?) in speaking you can even add a "ah" sound to the end: 啊 你有几个兄弟姐妹啊?

kittybasil:

Wah, no medal for me e.e Thanks everyone! ♥
