has an imperfect verb (note the ~ba~ in the ending), and imperfect is most commonly translated as 'was/were ~ing'. Often it's not, but at this level, where you need to show that you understand the difference between imperfect and perfect, you should always try to translate it with something like 'was/were ~ing', 'used to ~' or 'would ~' where English allows you to. So 'portabamus' should be 'we were carrying.
