lolokrat:

Can someone let me know the steps to work this problem out?

lolokrat:

jimthompson5910:

The triangles are similar, so we can form the proportion below \(\large \frac{11}{38.5} = \frac{x+2}{3x+8}\) Cross multiply to get \(\large 11(3x+8) = 38.5(x+2)\) then distribute \(\large 11(3x)+11(8) = 38.5(x)+38.5(2)\) \(\large 33x+88 = 38.5x + 77\) Do you see how to solve for x?

lolokrat:

oh i got everything right up until 33x+88=38.5x+77 how do i solve that? i got x=2 which is obviously not right lol

jimthompson5910:

x = 2 is correct. It leads to AC = 3x+8 AC = 3*2+8 AC = 6+8 AC = 14

lolokrat:

ohhh i'm not sure why i skipped that step lol my brain is fried. thanks for pointing that out

jimthompson5910:

Here's how to get x = 2 33x+88=38.5x+77 33x+88-77=38.5x+77-77 ... subtract 77 from both sides 33x+11 = 38.5x 33x+11-33x = 38.5x-33x .... subtract 33x from both sides 11 = 5.5x 5.5x = 11 5.5x/5.5 = 11/5.5 ....... divide both sides by 5.5 x = 2

lolokrat:

yup got that

lolokrat:

i just completely missed the step of plugging it into AC lol

jimthompson5910:

I gotcha, yeah that happens to me a lot as well

lolokrat:

i was like WTH how theyd get 14 and was reworking it hahaha

lolokrat:

thanks again

jimthompson5910:

no problem
