mhchen:

How do you find an approximate normal curve for a discrete distribution?

mhchen:

For example: |dw:1575324911919:dw|

mhchen:

|dw:1575324940414:dw| If I'm given that the mean is there at u, how would I find the standard-deviation of that normal curve?

mhchen:

and I know the exact heights of every bar

justjm:

I'm not quite sure if I get your question. The height is just the frequency of the range or specific data values, so you would find the standard deviation how you normally would, correct?

mhchen:

yes

justjm:

So did I answer your question or was it something else you're looking for?

Nnesha:

what another piece of info is given. perhaps z?

mhchen:

no, I'm only given the height of these bars and the mean

justjm:

So you're just given the frequency and the mean? I'm not sure how you're supposed to find the standard deviation then. Is there any other value or property given, such as kurtosis?

mhchen:

nope, I'm just trying to find an approximate normal curve, so at this point I'm just randomly choosing one xd. But I'm still not able to find a formula that fits my bar graph

justjm:

Hahaha good luck hope it won't take a bit tooo long

Nnesha:

you might have to consider the fitness. Are you going to fit the data in 95% interval or 68 or 99%?

mhchen:

yo it's over now. I just made a guess. Yeah since one standard deviation from the mean would contain 34% of the data, and that first block containss like 29% so I just pushed it a bit further from there

Nnesha:

Sorry to bother. If I knew you found the solution I wouldn't have made the comment.

mhchen:

its k xd
