Gucchi:

Which of the following correctly uses absolute value to show the distance between −80 and 15? |−80 − 15| = |−95| = −95 units |−80 + 15| = |−65| = 65 units |−80 − 15| = |−95| = 95 units |−80 + 15| = |−65| = −65 units

Gucchi:

Please help me. I'm stuck. c

Gucchi:

I'm stuck.*

Ashoka:

A and D are incorrect. if we absolute value something it can't be negative. Also distance is never negative

Ashoka:

?

Gucchi:

True

Gucchi:

I'm thinking c?

Ashoka:

Yep, correct

Gucchi:

If you don't mind, can you please give me an explanation why that is the answer

Gucchi:

I'm a lil confused

Ashoka:

Yeah sure, so you have two points, -80 and 15, to find the distance between those 2 points you need to take one and subtract from the other In the scenario of |−80 − 15| = |−95| = 95 units We took -80 and subtracted from 15, now distance is never negative so thats why we used absolute value

Gucchi:

So why does it say the answer is -95 but then it changes to 95

Ashoka:

Absolute value, it takes the positive value of everything, for example if I have -23, the absolute value of that is 23. Its just a reference of how far 23 is from the origin regardless of the sign (negative or positive)

Ashoka:

So when u absolute value anything it turns out to be positive

Gucchi:

Ohh

Gucchi:

Thank you so much! I was so confused on this

Gucchi:

I'll keep this in mind

Ashoka:

No problem! Glad you found it helpful, also please click best response but that is up to you : )

Gucchi:

Np!

Gucchi:

Will do.
