List two of the amendments contained in the Bill of Rights and explain the rights they protect.
Can more info be provided on these two amendments, please?
first- Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
second- The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Such language has created considerable debate regarding the Amendment's intended scope.
Thank you for your response!
The first amendment says that congress (effectively the federal government) cannot make any laws that infringe or restrict on a person's ability to speak. There are limits such as stuff involving obscenity laws and what not, but other than those restrictions, congress cannot violate a person's freedom of speech. This extends to the press which is either written form of speech (ie print) or a visual medium such as tv and internet streaming. Also part of the first amendment is the right of assembly. This is where peaceful protests form. As long as looting doesn't happen, and other negative things like that, then protests are a good way to have the government try to address the concerns of citizens. Lastly, the freedom of religion is part of the first amendment. Congress cannot support nor suppress one particular religion. The government must stay neutral on religion. This is the so called "separation of church and state". Though some could argue that the line is a bit blurred when it comes to things like swearing on the bible or having prayer in the house chamber.
