For over 15,000 years, man has been dependent on animals, and vice-versa, in a number of ways . However, have you ever really thought about how animals and humans relate to one another? Humans and animals have different ways of interacting, protecting, and caring for their offspring. Each species has an unique way of communicating and finding ways to ensure the safety and survival of their species. Although there are differences in physical characteristics, living conditions, and finding ways to survive, animals and humans relate to one another in a variety of ways, as learned through these three stories, “Reading Buddies,” “from My Life with the Chimpanzees,” and “ Hachiko, A true story of a Loyal dog.’’ Since the domestication of dogs over 10,000 years ago, humans have developed a connection benefiting both species. According to the article “Reading Buddies,” there are three ways humans and dogs relate. They relate by comforting each other, developing confidence, and helping one another. The first way animals and humans relate is through comfort. According to page ninety-five, animals are not in any hurry which allows children to make mistakes and stumble over words. Children can take their time and practice skills without feeling rushed. Dogs are comforted by the reading. The Arizona Animal Welfare League and Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has started to read to dogs as they await adoption. Volunteers read to the dogs calming them down and making them more comfortable around people. In turn, the animals become happier, healthier animals that end up in loving homes. A second way that dogs and humans relate to each other is by building confidence in one another. Children love reading to the dogs because the dogs won’t laugh at them for making a mistake. If a child mispronounces a word, the dog does not stop him/ her and correct them, and the dog will not judge the child. In addition, animals make good listeners eliminating the feeling of anxiety in children. As a result of reading programs like this, many libraries and schools have started to use animals to build confidence in struggling readers. A struggling reader was asked how she feels the dogs help her and she replied, “I have never finished a whole book before.” The reading buddy program has not only improved her self confidence, but it has helped her grow academically. The final way that dogs and humans relate, as seen in “Reading Buddies,”

is by helping each other. In paragraph two on page ninety-four, the author stated that thousands of children have improved their attitude about reading and their reading comprehension. Dogs provide a nonjudgmental ear for students to improve academically, while humans provide animals the opportunity to learn to develop behavioral skills that will improve their chances of being adopted. Animals may not be able to talk to humans, but they do relate to, and communicate with, humans in a unique way and the benefits of these human to animal relationships are remarkable. In my “life with the Chimpanzees” there are many ways humans and animals relate to one and another, for example, they are both resourceful, and lastly fearful. The first simularie is fear, they both share fear in many ways, the first way is in paragraph 43 it states, “ suddenly a chimp charged straight forward at me, his hair bristle with rage, at the minute he ran off, I stood still, I have noticed that my legs have been trembling, yet again 2 more chimps charged at me. The shows that the chimps were unfiller with Jane but she knew them so they were protecting themselves but then the chimps noticed it was Jane. Another example from the text is on page 207, paragraph 42 it states, “ To my right I saw a large black hand shaking a branch and bright eyes glaring at me threateningly through the foliage. The last example of fear is on page 102 paragraph 5 it states, “ the chimps were afraid of the strange white skinned creature (that was I) and gave their barking alarm call, “waa-hoo!” again and again. The next characteristic they both have in common is resourceful. On page 106, paragraph 38 it states, “ As I watched, he picked a blade of grass, packed it in a tunnel in the mound, and then withdrew it. These creatures are so marvelous, in their own way and they relate to humans in their own way and so do humans relate to animals in their own way. In Hachiko, a true story of a loyal dog there are many ways Dr. Ueno and Hachiko have a special relationship, such as Loyal, Determined, and lastly fear. Hachiko is a loyal dog by going to Shibuya Station patiently waiting for Dr. Ueno each and every day. One example from the text is on page 120 paragraph 17 it states, “A few days later he was back at Shibuya Station, patiently waiting, his brown eyes fixed on the entrance but when the train came Dr. Ueno didn’t, but came to find out he had passed away. Another example is on page 121 paragraph 25 it states, “ as the years went by Hachiko got older, he became very stiff, and could barely walk to Shibuya Station, but he still owent everyday to meet his master. The last thing is fear, one example from the text is on page 120 and paragraph 15, “” it states Papa had told me that Hachiko had been taken several miles away to live with Dr, Uenos ancestors because he had passed away. But I will never see him again, said the little girl. In Hachiko the dog is very Loyal so are the people because the people had built a statue of Hachiko and the people have collected money to do that so this proves that this story is Loyal in many ways. Although humans and animals are unique in physical appearances and the ability to communicate and survive, each story or poem, “Reading Buddies,” “from My Life with the Chimpanzees,” and “Hachiko, described unique ways for humans and animals to relate. From building confidence in young readers, using resources to survive, protecting loved ones, providing comfort in time of needs, animals and humans share common bonds. These relationships will only continue to grow and develop as we learn and discover new ways to interact, cope, and survive in an ever-changing world.
