sandy011:

Which expression is equivalent to 4(2p+4q)?

Bonnnnn:

do you have options?

sandy011:

no

Angle:

You are likely going to use the distributive property for this problem

sandy011:

i dont even know how to use that

Angle:

I'll show you an easy one: 2( 3 + 4 ) = 14 correct?

sandy011:

yea

Angle:

The long way of doing that problem is 2(3 + 4) = 2*3 + 2*4 = 6 + 8 = 14 In this long method, the "2" gets "distributed" to the 3 and the 4

sandy011:

oh okay

Angle:

if we use this long method called the distributive property we're going to distribute that "4" at the front of your problem to the (2p) and the (4q)

sandy011:

so multiply 4 with (2p) and (4q)?

Angle:

yup! but keep the plus sign in between the two sections

sandy011:

okay so would it be 2p+(3p+16q) ?

Angle:

whoop 16q is good how did you get 3p?

Angle:

Angle:

sandy011:

oh so it would be 4p+16q?

Angle:

try again? unless thats' a typo?

sandy011:

4p should be 8p right?

Angle:

yup!

sandy011:

so 8p+16q is the answer?

Angle:

I do believe so some problems might ask for a middle step, so I'm not completely sure

sandy011:

ah okay thank you
