Gucchi:

Which of the following correctly summarizes how the media affected public opinion on the Nixon/Watergate scandal? Many Americans saw photographs of Nixon behaving negatively during the hearings and came to distrust him. Many Americans read the accounts in books and magazines and were influenced to support the president. Many Americans learned about the scandal as it unfolded by watching television and formed opinions based on that coverage. Many Americans saw advertisements in local papers taken out by Nixon's party and felt encouraged to support Nixon.

Gucchi:

I think it is D. Am i right?

AZ:

Do you remember what @jimthompson5910 said in your previous question? You want an answer choice that says Americans did not support or trust the president.

Gucchi:

Hmm, so A?

AZ:

Well, not an answer choice that literally says it haha. Remember that he resigned before he was impeached or indicted. There were no hearings. The media portrayed him negatively during the scandal which is what influenced the public's perceptions of him

jimthompson5910:

That's correct. By the 1970s, most people were getting their news from tv, and the negative coverage made people's support drop. The election of 1972 was effectively a landslide for Nixon. Look at the electoral college map for that year. It's nearly entirely red (except for the state of Massachusetts). Nixon received 520 electoral college votes as opposed to George McGovern's vote count of 17. Further proof of his initial popularity is that Nixon got about 47 million votes to McGovern getting only about 29 million. Such a landslide is fairly rare in politics and it shows just how much people liked him at the time. Basically Nixon didn't need to have people do shady things with the election because he would have won handily. However, by the time Watergate started to pick up steam is when people were beginning to see flaws in him, and see him as corrupt. The timeline of events is fairly lengthy so I recommend doing further research. The short story is that it took about 2 years for the process to unfold (1972 to 1974). This is enough time to have the media paint a bad picture, rightly so, of the president.

Gucchi:

Thank you so much! I needed an explanation.

jimthompson5910:

Sure thing
