A store advertises 15% off an item that regularly sells for $300 A) what is the sale price of the item? C) if 8% sales tax is charged on the sale price, what is the total with tax?
Okay so for this one what we would do is multiply the amount off by the original amount. So because we have 15% off what is 15% in decimal form?
2.25
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @yourgrandpa 2.25 \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) Well 15% is 15/100 right? Aka 15% out of 100%
1500
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @yourgrandpa 1500 \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) No. Okay for this one what we would do is we have 100% or 100 = 1 or 1.00 We see that the decimal moved over to the left 2 places right? 100 --> 1.00
im confused
Okay so for example 100% of- lets say a cookie- is the whole cookie right?
yes
So that would make one whole cookie right?
yes
so 100%=1 right?
Did you get that or-?
kinda got it
Alright so then we have 100% = 1 1 is the same thing as 1.00 right?
yes
So then we have 100%=1.00 Now 100 is the same as 100.0 correct?
yes
Okay now what changed in 100.0 and 1.00, because they both have 1's and 0's and only the decimal moved.
you lost more zeros when you moved the decimal???????
|dw:1614111670896:dw| Okay so yeah as you see here you move the decimal to the left twice to make them equal each other right? Because 100.0 ≠ 1.00, but 1.000 does equal 1.00
Do you get that?
yes got it
Okay so now we have 15% from the problem right?
yes
15%=15/100 correct? Because its 15% out of 100% as I said before.
yes correct
Alright so we have 15.0 out of 100.0 and what did we do on the old problem to get the 100 to equal the 0-?
equal the 1* sorry
Do you get what we're doing here? If not Look at the old picture and see what we did before, and we'd do the same thing now.
move the decimal
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @yourgrandpa move the decimal \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) How many times? And in which direction?
2 and to the left
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @yourgrandpa 2 and to the left \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) Yes! Good job. :) So now we would do the same with 37, so what would you get when you move it twice to the left?
|dw:1614112645259:dw| It would be 0.37 correct?
yes
Okay so now it says an item that regularly sells for $300, so we multiply that and 0.37 (which we got from the last part), and what'd that equal?
;-; rip-
uHm so anyways when you come back after you do that you would subtract what you got from $300 because it says `15% off`on your problem.
Oops sorry I probably confused you- Idk where I got the 0.37 one but anyways you would do the 0.15 not 0.37-
But anyways after that you would get: 200*0.15=$30 200-30=$170
Then after that we have to add the sales tax to what we got: 170 (old answer) *0.08 (8% in decimal form) = $13.6 $170(old answer) + $13.6 (answer we just got) = $183.6 $183.6=$183.60 Answer: $183.60

thank you for your help (:
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @yourgrandpa thank you for your help (: \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) You're welcome, but do you understand what I did?
And do you think if needed- you could do it by yourself?
