“Slavery had its dark side as well as its bright side.”(Keckley). Keckley was a slave that started working for her masters at the age of four.Later on in life she brought her and her sons freedom with money to escape slavery. During that time she came up with the opinion that slavery wasn’t all that bad from her perspective and there was a beneficial side to it for her. Keckley was a former slave and during her time in slavery and when slavery ended she had the idea that there was an advantage you got from slavery but also an inequitable side.“Notwithstanding all the wrongs that slavery heaped upon me, I can bless it for one thing—youth's important lesson of self–reliance.”(Keckley). Keckley already stated that she thinks slavery has a bad side but also a good side when you look at it. She admits that slavery has inflicted many wrongful punishments and acts on her throughout her time in it. She also says that in her time in slavery she learned valuable lessons that would get her through life from it. Keckley says that even though slavery did her wrong it still taught her things that would come handy to her in her future making it a neutral thing to her. Keckley was whipped by her master for dropping a baby that he was supposed to act as a maid for “I be taken out and lashed for my carelessness. The blows were not administered with a light hand, I assure you, and doubtless the severity of the lashing has made me remember the incident so well. This was the first time I was punished in this cruel way, but not the last.”(Keckley).Keckley now talks about the bad side of slavery for her. She did not complete a task her masters told her to do this caused her to be whipped badly. She can remember because it was the first time she was ever punished by them in such a way. Keckley avows that it was a cruel and vile way for her to be treated by others for her mistake. She thinks it was wrong for them to do something like that to her for a simple mistake.Keckley remembers that this want the only time she was treated in such a cold way by her masters. After Keckley purchased her freedom later on in life she started working for Mrs.Lincoln as her personal dressmaker and dresser.Mrs.Lincoln and Keckley built a friendship over time. Mrs.Lincoln confided in Keckley thoughts on problems she had to get reassurance that things would be alright. At the same time Keckley tried her best to defend Mrs.Lincoln from the public's brutal judgment towards her before and after her downfall."I cannot believe so. I have no hope of the re–election of Mr. Lincoln. The canvass is a heated one, the people begin to murmur at the war, and every vile charge is brought against my husband.". "No matter," I replied, "Mr. Lincoln will be re–elected. I am so confident of it”.(Keckley).Mrs.Lincoln didn't think Mr.Lincoln would get relected. She thought he wouldn't due to the fact that people in the war were judging him because he was trying to end slavery.People in the war thought by him trying to end slavery and fighting with the south it was disrupting the peace he promised america.Keckley fully belives that he will be relected and is telling Mrs.Lincoln that everything will be fine.Mrs.Lincoln came to Keckley with her problems mostly for her to free her from the fear that Mr.Lincoln would not be relected. Keckley thinks the public should stop judging Mrs.Lincoln based on rumors that are told and that if they truly knew why Mrs.Lincoln did some things their opinions would change.“Mrs. Lincoln may have been imprudent, but since her intentions were good, she should be judged more kindly than she has been. But the world do not know what her intentions were; they have only been made acquainted with her acts without knowing what guided her actions.”(Keckley).Keckley thinks the public judges Mrs.Lincoln based on her actions and rumors that have spread about her.If they only formed rude opinions about her on things that were said about her then she thinks they have no right to judge her.Keckley thinks that if they were to see her true objectives of what she actually did their opinions and thoughts on Mrs.Lincoln would change.Keckley knows that Mrs.Lincoln may come off as if she doesn’t care about the effects of her actions but she really isn’t half of the time.Keckley still does believe Mrs.Lincoln does deserve to be judged but not as harshly as she was,and that Mrs.Lincoln should be judged based on the truth. Keckley came up with the idea that slavery has a beneficial.Keckley had the opinion that slavery taught her valuble lessons such as self reliance and other things that would get her through life. Additionally she thought that Mrs.Lincoln didnt deserve the brutal judgment of the public, and it would stop if they knew Mrs.Lincoln's true motives.Mrs.Lincoln and they developed a friendship.Mrs.Lincoln confided in Keckley with her opinions on bad doubts to get some reassurance that things would be ok.Keckley tried to defend Mrs.Lincoln from the harsh rumors and judgment of the public.
