He was born in Down Ampney, in the UK, in 1872. He passed away in 1958. In the first half of the 20th century, he was a popular English composer. He studied under two leading figures of the late 19th century Revival of English music at Trinity College, Cambridge, and the Royal College of music in London. He studied with Max Bruch in Berlin and with Maurice Rave in Paris in 1909. He was music editor of The English Hymnal in 1904–06 and he wrote for this his popular "Sine Nomine." He became professor of composition at the Royal College of Music after his artillery service during World War I. His observations of English folk song and his interest in Tudor English music made his talent more plentiful. The orchestra, stage, chamber and vocal works are part of Vaughan Williams. His three Norfolk Rhapsodies — especially the first in E-moll (first performed in 1906) — is the first work to demonstrate his assimilation into the melodic and harmonic structure of the folk song contours. His 9 symphonies cover a wide variety of phrases. A London Symphony (1914; revised 1915; rev. 1918, 1920, 1934) and a 7th adaptation of his music for Scott's Antarctic movie are especially popular (1949). The Fantasy on a Topic by Thomas Tallis (1910); concert for piano are other pieces from the Orchester. And you can find plentymore information from this site.
