Cross-examination is generally limited to questioning only on matters that were raised during direct examination. Leading questions may be asked during cross-examination, since the purpose of cross-examination is to test the credibility of statements made during direct examination.

Cite the source next time. Anyways Crissy, so in the response given by Classix, it shows that cross-examination is meant to test the credibility of something. I think if you know a witness is telling the truth, you shouldn't really try and discredit that. When taking the stand, one must take an oath to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Cross-examination is kind of like a way to make someone slip up if they're not being honest. It's like a double check on things to verify the story in which they are telling is accurate. So, if I was answering this, since you said it's more of a judge of character, i'd say that no, it's not proper. If you aren't sure if a witness is telling the truth, then I think that trying to discredit their story could be a good tactic for a lawyer.
