After we got out of class, Hayward and I went straight to the locker room to change. Coach Jenkins was serious about starting practice on time. Two hours of lacrosse later, the whole team was exhausted, sweaty, and covered in grass and mud. I hurried to the locker room to shower and change quickly. By the time I got outside the school, Hayward was already waiting for me. Every Friday night we like to hit up Bertinelli’s, the best pizza parlor in town. At 7 p.m. on a Friday night in this town, there’s no better place to be. What is the most likely reason the author chose to organize this paragraph chronologically?

SmokeyBrown:

Hi, and welcome to QuestionCove! In the passage above, the author is recounting a series of events as they happened, in the order they happened. It seems as though they are trying to help the reader understand how one event led to another or, in other words, present a timeline of the events that day. For this purpose, it seems that a "chronological" (based on order of occurrence) retelling of events would make sense for the speaker and be easy to understand for the reader.

SmokeyBrown:

To say it a different way, it is as though the author wants us to be able to experience the events of the character in the same way they did, which includes the order of events. I think that is why it is necessary to use chronological ordering for this passage. Generally, when recounting events in the past, chronological order makes sense, especially when the speaker wants the listener to relate to their experience, as I assume they do.

The most logical reason for an author to use chronological order in their writing is to ensure that the time of events is placed correctly and that each event comes in the order from the time they first started to when the events last occurred.
This explanation also makes sense to me :)

It's probably because it wouldn't make sense otherwise
