The main conflict in a story gives the story a base. It gives the characters a reason to continue on, and the story a meaning. Though, this would belong under the English Category, not Music.

does it help the plot advance

Conflict helps the plot advance due to the fact that it gives the characters room to grow, because in most stories, the character(s) have things they need to fix bout themselves.

For sure. People are more likely to be drawn in and continue to read to see how the conflict is resolved. People, though they don't like to admit it, do enjoy conflict. It's interesting.

A ploy lots of authors use to their advantage.

The turning point in the story, that ends the conflict once and for all. The climax is not always the main problem, but what the protag/characters do to solve that problem whether good or not.

The climax of a story is usually where most of the problem is presented, for example, in Harry potter and the sorcerers stone, when he fights his teacher about the stone
