Mochi:

What would be a good thesis statement for someone against tiger parenting?

sammixboo:

Well, a thesis is just stating your argument. So something as simple as "I do not like tiger parenting because it is bad" is a thesis statement. However, you want to flesh it out a little bit to make it a good thesis, obviously!

Mochi:

Yes, I know what a thesis is. I'm just looking for examples since the intros are a little hard for me.

SmokeyBrown:

Thesis statements do not require specific supporting examples or evidence. As sammixboo stated, the purpose of a thesis statement is mainly to state your argument or stance. You would, of course, want to include supporting evidence soon after, probably in the same paragraph. Based on the assumption that one of the important goals of parenting is to prepare a child for life in certain ways, one strategy to argue against "tiger parenting" might be to show that the practices involved in that parenting style are not more effective than other, less harsh methods at preparing children for life. This may be true or it may not be. Perhaps you can find studies and anecdotes to demonstrate this claim. Of course, it is only one possibility of many that you might use to further your argument. Alternatively, you might decide to show how other parenting methods are more effective or less harmful than "tiger parenting", sort of proving your argument by inverse? The fact that you already have an opinion on the topic is a good start, and it also means that you must have reasons for believing what you do, yes? Perhaps you can start by drawing on your own thoughts and experiences, since they've taken you this far. If that is not enough, consider doing some research online. Given how controversial "tiger parenting" can be, I'm sure you'll find many sources arguing both for and against the practice; points on all sides of the issue will be helpful as you develop your ideas and organize them in writing.
