What is -5d + 4d = ?

Tonycoolkid21:

idk do i sub

Tranquility:

Think of the 'd' as an apple Since we have -5, think of that negative number as you're owing someone 5 something. You owe someone 5 apples and you have 4 apples so you give it to him. How many apples do you now owe or have left?

Tonycoolkid21:

1?

Tranquility:

Essentially what is -5 + 4 and then remember to add the 'd' back again We can only add things that are like terms so -5d + 4d can be added However, if it was 2 and 2a. You cannot add them because one has an 'a' and the other does not.

Yes, you owe 1 apple still. And owing someone means you're in the negative so that would mean you ultimately have -1 apple since you owe an apple to someone else.

Tonycoolkid21:

what next were do i add 1 in d

Tranquility:

Can you tell me what -5 + 4 = ?

Tranquility:

And then you should be able to easily figure out what -5d + 4d equals to

-1

Tranquility:

Yes so -5d + 4d is going to be -1d You can write that also as just `-d` because the 1 is implied

Tonycoolkid21:

nvm this will mess up my brain am go ask my sister

Tonycoolkid21:
