That's kind of an odd way to illustrate the question, but I think I get it On one side of the "equation", there's five x's and two 1's; on the other side, there's six x's and eight 1's We could write the equation as: 5x + 2 = 6x + 8 And then we would solve for x We could start by subtracting 5x from both sides to get 2 = x + 8 Then, we could subtract 8 from both sides to get -6 = x And just like that, we've solved for the value of x
