UkuleleGirl:

Factoring. Is this correct?

UkuleleGirl:

I got the answer \[\frac{ -2 }{ 3 } \] and \[x=-2\]

dude:

Hmm not quite Remember that if you have a coefficient in front of the highest power, you have to take it out \(\color{red}{3}x^2+8x+4\) Turns to this \((3x+\_)(x+\_)\) Now you want to find the factors of 4 Could you list them?

UkuleleGirl:

The factors of 4? I only got 2,2 and 4,4

dude:

Careful, 1,4 not 4,4 :P 4*4 is 16, not 4

UkuleleGirl:

I divided 4 by 4. My math teacher said to divide to find the factors. I'm just not sure

dude:

Ah, do you understand what factors are?

UkuleleGirl:

not really...

UkuleleGirl:

I'm sorry. I just never learned these things.

UkuleleGirl:

School ends in 5 minutes. Can I close this post and come back to it later.

dude:

Factors are the 2 numbers that you multiply For example, \(3\times4=12\) The factors here are 3 and 4 \(5\times 6=30\) The factors here are 5 and 6 So in our problem to find the factors of 4, you want to find out what numbers will multiply to 4 \(\color{red}{2}\times \color{red}{2}=4\) \(\color{red}{1}\times \color{red}{4}=4\) This is where we got 2,2 and 1,4 Does this make sense? Feel free to ask questions too

dude:

No problem, feel free to open a question if you need help

UkuleleGirl:

Yes that makes sense.

UkuleleGirl:

Thank you very much. I have to go.

UkuleleGirl:

Thanks for helping me :)
