From 1955 until his assassination in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist clergyman and activist who became the most recognizable voice and leader in the civil rights movement. King, an African American church leader and the son of Martin Luther King Sr., an early civil rights activist, and minister, advanced civil rights for people of color in the United States through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent activism. His approach to leading the civil rights movement in the South was different from that of Booker T. Washington and black-and-tan faction leader Perry Wilbon Howard II, who had previously advocated for tolerance. King took part in and organized marches for voting rights, desegregation, and labor rights.
Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned a society in which his children would be assessed on the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a civil rights movement that focused on nonviolent protest during a turbulent time. For his children and the children of all oppressed people, Martin Luther King's vision of equality and civil disobedience altered the world. In his period and succeeding decades, he influenced the lives of African Americans.
